Sexual Harassment

Is sexual harassment a crime? It’s not found in the Criminal Code the same way other types of sexual assault are. However, the legal provisions described earlier do prohibit it.

 

The Many Different Forms of Sexual Harassment

 

  • Posting material of a sexual nature, such as a sexually explicit calendar, etc.
  • Repeated displays of unwanted sexual attention
  • Sexually suggestive references, remarks or behaviours
  • Physical advances
  • Asking intrusive and intimate questions about a person’s marital status or sexual activities
  • Unwanted and repeated invitations to go out or to go for a drink
  • Promising rewards or threatening retaliation, whether implicitly or explicitly, with the goal of having the person agree to a sexual demand
  • Exhibitionism
  • Remarks or behaviours that have sexual connotations and that could be reasonably perceived as creating a harmful work environment
  • Lustful looks, for instance, at a person’s sexual parts
  • Whistles and catcalls, etc.
