Basic, classification and reclassification criteria for all functions of the department:
- Every candidate must submit a resume relevant to the prerequisites mentioned below.
- Indicate only the projects for which you are credited.
- Your resume can include movies, TV series, commercials, music videos or any other type of productions.
- Mandatory training and certifications:
- Standard First Aid with CPR/AED (Level C)
- WHMIS 2015
- Criminal liability for occupational health and safety
- Respect, civility and prevention of harassment in the workplace (QUEBEC)
- Basic Fall Protection
- Safety Qualifications for Lift Truck (classes I, IV, V)
- Safety Qualifications for Rough Terrain Lift Trucks (Class VII)
- Safety Qualifications for Scissor Lifts and Articulated Boom Lifts
- Safe operation of lift trucks
- Primary Access Scaffold
- For each function aforementioned, a documented work equivalence will be analyzed and considered, and subject to approval by the membership committee. Also, skills for which the candidate submits a certification will be considered. Likewise, technical skills that can be validated by a diploma, a portfolio or any other kind of proof of qualification will be considered.
Classification and reclassification criteria for each function:
Key Grip refers to a member who:
1- Has cumulated more than 5 years’ experience as Assistant Key Grip.
2- Submits 3 reference letters: one signed by a Director of Photography, with whom he/she has worked in the past, one signed by a Key Lighting technician and one signed by a Key Grip, with whom he/she has worked in the past. The letters from the Key Lighting Technician and from the Key Grip must come from IATSE 514 members in good standing with more than 5 years’ experience at their positions.
3- Has completed a training course on Criminal liability for occupational health and safety.
4- Has completed a training course in Human Resources Management.
Assistant Key Grip refers to a member who:
1- Has cumulated 630 days as a Grip department technician.
2- Submits 2 reference letters: one signed by a Key Lighting Technician and one signed by a Key Grip, with whom he/she has worked in the past. The letters must come from IATSE 514 members in good standing with more than 5 years’ experience at their positions.
Grip refers to a member who:
1- Has cumulated 120 days of documented work – on at least 2 productions – in the function he/she seeks.
2- Submits 3 reference letters: one signed by a Key Grip with whom he/she has worked in the past and 2 signed by members of the Grip department. The letters must come from IATSE 514 members in good standing with more than 5 years’ experience at their position.
Rigging Key Grip refers to a member who:
1- Has cumulated 200 days as Key Rigging Grip.
2- Has cumulated 200 days as Assistant Key Rigging Grip.
3- Submits 2 reference letters: one signed by a Key Lighting Technician and one signed by a Key Grip, with whom he/she has worked in the past. The letters must come from IATSE 514 members in good standing with more than 5 years’ experience at their positions.
4- Has completed a training course on Criminal liability for occupational health and safety.
5- Has completed a training course in Human Resources Management
6- Has completed the following training courses: Fall Protection Rescue (Advanced Level) and Scaffolding (rosette, tubes and fittings).
Assistant Rigging Key Grip refers to a member who:
1- Has cumulated 100 days as Assistant Rigging Key Grip.
2- Has cumulated 200 days as Rigging Grip.
3- Has cumulated 100 days as a Grip department technician.
4- Submits 2 reference letters: one signed by a Key Lighting Technician and one signed by a Key Grip, with whom he/she has worked in the past. The letters must come from IATSE 514 members in good standing with more than 5 years’ experience at their positions.
5- Has completed the following training courses: Fall Protection Rescue (Advanced Level) and Scaffolding (rosette, tubes and fittings).

Dolly Grip Operator refers to a member who:
Can demonstrate a work experience of at least 90 days.
Camera Car Operator refers to a member who:
Can demonstrate a work experience of at least 90 days.
Crane Technician refers to a member who:
Can demonstrate a work experience of at least 90 days.
